How to Compare Building Quotes

(and Why a Detailed Quote Saves You Money in the Long Run)

Why Comparing Quotes Can Be So Confusing

If you’ve ever gathered a few building quotes, you’ll know how different they can look.
One might be a single-page summary, while another runs for pages of detail. One price could seem like a bargain — until you realise what’s been left out.

At Plumbstruct Industries, we understand how overwhelming that can be.
That’s why our quotes are designed to be transparent, comprehensive, and accurate — so you can make an informed decision with confidence, even if you decide not to use our services.

Why a Plumbstruct Industries Quote Often Looks “Higher” — But Delivers Better Value

Our approach to quoting is simple: we quote for the entire job, not just part of it.
We think through every stage of the renovation — from demolition to the final coat of paint — so you don’t get caught out later.

Many quotes appear cheaper because they leave out key items that will inevitably be needed later.
That might include:

  • Fixtures and fittings (baths, tapware, vanities, tiles, mirrors, towel rails, etc.)

  • Electrical and lighting work

  • Plumbing connections

  • Waterproofing, tiling, and painting

  • Site preparation or rubbish removal

When those items are excluded, you’ll either receive surprise “variations” or be asked to pay other trades separately.

At Plumbstruct Industries, we include allowances for all required trades and materials from the outset — giving you a “no more to pay” outcome wherever possible.

We don’t like surprises any more than you do.

The Difference Between an Estimate and a Quote

If your builder hasn’t inspected the site yet, any price you receive should be treated as an estimate only. Without access to the property, it’s impossible to accurately assess site conditions, structural requirements, or service access points.

A detailed, fixed quotation can only be prepared after a thorough site visit. At Plumbstruct Industries, we spend time walking through the space, discussing how you want to use it, identifying potential challenges, and ensuring the scope is crystal clear.

A professional quote should take more than a quick 15-minute look — it should reflect understanding, planning, and care.

We Encourage You to Compare — Carefully

We genuinely encourage homeowners to obtain multiple quotes and ask questions. Comparing is smart.

But instead of comparing purely on price, look at:

Scope of Works: Does it clearly define what’s included and excluded?
Allowances: Are the Prime Cost (PC) and Provisional Sum (PS) items realistic?
Licensing & Insurance: Is the builder a registered domestic builder and, if plumbing is included, a licensed plumber?
Detail: Does the quote include other trades, or will you be responsible for organising them separately?
Transparency: Does the builder explain their process clearly and provide documentation upfront?

Your builder should also be able to provide their registration and licence numbers upon request. These aren’t just formalities — they protect your home, your investment, and your insurance coverage.

Red Flags to Watch Out For

🚩 Unrealistically low prices — often achieved by leaving out essential work.
🚩 Vague descriptions — “allow for” without clear quantities or specifications.
🚩 Too many provisional sums — a sign the builder hasn’t done their homework.
🚩 Missing licence or registration details.
🚩 Pressure to sign quickly — you should never feel rushed.
🚩 Short or no site inspection — accuracy requires time and attention to detail.

The Plumbstruct Industries Process

When you receive a quote from Plumbstruct Industries, you can expect:

  • A clear, itemised breakdown of the scope and inclusions

  • Allowances for fixtures, fittings, and other trades

  • Compliance with VBA building and plumbing regulations

  • Honest communication and transparent pricing

  • A “no more to pay” agreement where every foreseeable element is covered

Our goal is to make sure your renovation — particularly complex spaces like bathrooms — is seamless from start to finish. By thinking ahead, we reduce the risk of delays, variations, and hidden costs.

REMEMBER:

A detailed quote takes more time to prepare — but it’s worth it. A well-planned quotation saves you money, stress, and time during construction. Whether you’re comparing bathroom renovations, extensions, or general building work, focus on clarity, compliance, and trust, not just the dollar figure.
